
Accra, Ghana – March 27, 2025 – Development Partners have pledged their continued commitment to supporting Ghana’s decentralisation agenda, emphasizing the need for sustained collaboration and policy dialogue. This commitment was reaffirmed by Ambassador Simone Giger, the Swiss Ambassador to Ghana, Togo, and Benin, and Co-Chair of the Decentralisation Sector Working Group (DSWG) during a high-level meeting convened by the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee (IMCC) on Decentralisation.
Speaking at the meeting, Ambassador Giger commended the government’s efforts towards decentralisation and acknowledged ongoing engagements, particularly Switzerland’s support for the Constitutional Review Committee and the DPAT arrangement. She expressed confidence in the government’s dedication to these reforms, stating,
“Switzerland, and I believe I can speak for other Development Partners as well, remain committed to supporting Ghana in achieving its decentralisation objectives in line with national development priorities. The government’s leadership is essential in driving these reforms forward.”
She further emphasized the importance of sustained policy dialogue, highlighting platforms like the DSWG as essential for aligning strategies, sharing best practices, and addressing challenges collaboratively.
Dr. Gameli Kewuribe Hoedoafia, Executive Secretary, expressed gratitude for the engagement of stakeholders, noting that the discussions reinforced the government’s commitment to deepening local governance. He stressed that decentralisation remains a critical pillar of Ghana’s national development agenda and that continuous collaboration with development partners is crucial for achieving meaningful reforms.
The high-level dialogue brought together key Ministers, including those from the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General’s Department, and the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection. Their participation underscored the broad government support for decentralisation reforms aimed at enhancing governance, service delivery, and community development across the country.
As Ghana advances its decentralisation initiatives, development partners have reiterated their readiness to provide technical and financial assistance, ensuring that the country’s local governance systems are more efficient, transparent, and responsive to the needs of citizens.
